The article, "Researchers Fooled A Google AI Into Thinking A Rifle Was A Helicopter" is written by Louise Matsakis. It was published December 20th 2017. The article was written to explain to the public what exactly Google's Artificial Intelligence Program can do, and how it was cheated by MIT researchers. The writer uses an interested tone to show that they are fascinated with the topic even though they are the one explaining it. She appeals mainly to ethos, citing specific events about the process both Google and MIT used, although she uses casual diction to make sure said processes are easy to understand.
The author uses a very intrigued tone showing that she cares about the entire Artificial Intelligence process, and how it was bypassed. This allows the reader to be able to enjoy the contents of the article as much as the author does. You can really tell how much she is interested when she is talking about the many various pixel tests that MIT conducted where they changed the pixels of a picture while keeping the objects in the photo in tact to bypass the system. The author appeals to ethos through the whole article. She begins the article by explaining Google's definition about what AI is and what it should do. She then goes into what the AI is actually capable of doing, and some mistakes it had previously made in the past that were released by Google. This helps her in her next explanation where she talks about the initial intent of the MIT researchers and how they planned to bypass the system. Finally she shows the results of what happened during the tests. All of these examples are from qualified sources, and help to assure the authors credibility. The authors purpose of the article is to 1: help the reader understand what AI is and how it works, and 2: explain why AI isn't as technically advanced as we think it may be, and how it may be bypassed. These are both effective because it shows the technically knowledgeable readers about what they will have access to in the near future, and explains about the tests that will be done to make sure that no malfunctions or mistakes will be allowed. The author opens her argument by talking about Google's new
